The Hachioji Castle Ruins and surrounding area were under the direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo period (17th-19th centuries) and became a national forest after the Meiji period (1868-). The relic around Main hall, where Hojo Ujiteru, the lord of the castle, conducted his political affairs, is still in good condition.
A large amount of bullets and charred rations were excavated from the Mail hall site, in addition to many vessels that give us an idea of what life was like in the castle during the Sengoku period (around the 16th century). These artifacts give us an idea of the fierce battles that took place in this castle.
A number of imported items were also unearthed. Among them, The Venetian lace glassware is the only item excavated in Japan. From these artifacts, we can see that Hojo Ujiteru was a powerful warlord. The excavated artifacts are on display at the Hachioji City Historical Museum.
