In 2020, the story of Hachioji City became the 88th in Japan and the only one in Tokyo to be designated as a Japan Heritage.
The title of the designated story is “Reki-Manzan Takaosan – The Story of Mulberry city Woven by Locals’ Prayers -“. Hachioji was called “Soto(Mulberry City)” because of its flourishing silk cultivation and fabrics.
This certified story tells the history of the city of Hachioji from Sengoku period (15-17C), when the warlord Hojo Ujiteru ruled the area as a lord of Takiyama Castle and Hachioji Castle, to the present and future, through connection with Mt. Takao.
