Izuna Gongen-do Hall is known as a typical shrine building of the late Edo period (late 19th century). It is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
The main deity,Izuna Daigongen, is enshrined in the shrine hall, which is brilliantly decorated with transom carvings and assemblages. Izuna Daigongen was revered as a guardian deity by many warlords during the Sengoku period (around the 16th century), and was also worshipped by the famous Japanese warlords Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen. Yakuo-in Temple received generous protection from the Hojo clan, a powerful warlord.
Mt.Takao is also known as a sacred mountain of the Tengu faith as well as the Izuna faith.
The statues of large and small Tengu are on both sides of the front of the hall. The Tengu is the symbol of Mt. Takao.
