高尾山のムササビ

The flying squirrel is a symbolic animal of Mt.Takao
Their appearance is depicted in the Edo period (early 19th century) edition of the “Musashi Meisho Zue”.
Flying squirrels usually live in trees.
They are nocturnal and come out of their burrows about 30 minutes after sunset to search for food such as leaves, buds, and seeds.
About 30 minutes before sunrise, they return to their burrows.
You can see them emerging from their burrows and gliding through the trees in the vicinity of Yakuo-in Temple.
Guided tours are available at Mt. Takao Visitor Center.
